Insurance FAQs:

Why don't you accept most insurance?

Insurance coverage for lactation care is a great thing! It increases accessibility, and eases the financial burden for families. However, our current medical insurance system imposes serious limitations on the level of care that can be provided, especially for complex situations. Without the time limits and constraints of insurance requirements, I can provide high-quality lactation care that is in-depth and personalized to address all your concerns, and help you meet your goals.

I do work with Wildflower to accept Cigna plans, as Wildflower's policies are more friendly to IBCLCs and families, compared to other major lactation billing networks.  However, all Wildflower consults require a $50 travel fee. Travel fees are already included in self-pay pricing.

How does your care differ from other IBCLCs? Why should I hire you, instead of an IBCLC who can bill my insurance?

One of the biggest differences is time! Working outside the insurance system allows me to spend more time at each visit, for high-quality, individualized care. My initial visits are 2-3hrs and follow-ups are typically 90mins. You get more face-to-face care with each visit! Additionally, I provide very detailed follow-up notes after visits, with resources for you to reference and share with your support team to maximize results. I also provide UNLIMITED email/text follow-up, so you know your questions will always be answered. Whether you have questions immediately following the visit, or once your baby becomes a toddler! Working with me is establishing a supportive relationship that lasts for the length of your breastfeeding/infant feeding journey, and beyond!

My care is also a bit different because I specialize in complex cases. Medical issues for parent or baby, persistent unresolved feeding issues, unique circumstances... I also enjoy offering second opinions for families who have seen another lactation consultant (maybe even a few!), but continue to struggle. I love to bring hope and peace to families who feel desperate and at their wits end!

If things are going fairly well, and you just have a few questions or need reassurance, choosing an IBCLC who can bill your insurance is a good option! However, if you have more complex needs, or you have seen other providers but continue to have unresolved questions and concerns, it is worth it to invest in intensive, individualized support. I am always happy to see families with less complex circumstances, and be your first opinion, as well!

How can we ease the financial burden of paying out of pocket for care?

I offer packages with significant discounts! Pre-pay for multiple visits, and save up to 20%!  Additionally, I can accept HSA cards for payment, if your insurance plan has an HSA account. I also provide a superbill for each visit that you can submit on your own for reimbursement from your insurance provider. If you have out-of-network coverage, it is likely you can recoup at least some of the fee, if not all.  If it feels like too much for you to manage, companies like Reimbursify can submit on your behalf, for a small fee.

Do you have any other areas of specialty?

Yes! Besides offering second opinions on complex cases, I also love working with preemies and other NICU families, parents with nipple/breast pain and damage, babies who are fussy or uncomfortable, and older babies/toddlers. I provide support for families with the full-spectrum of lactation issues, from birth through weaning, as well as any family who is experiencing feeding challenges, including babies who are formula fed.
